ID Challenge
Since the forecast for tonight is supposed to be a chilly 2 degrees, I thought I would post an ID Challenge that would remind us all of Spring.
I photographed this bird last spring at the Baker Wetlands in Lawrence, KS.
Here is another shot:
Who can ID this bird?
It is indeed a Virginia Rail! I sure wish it had been a Clapper, but I was pretty happy at actually seeing a Virginia rather than just hearing them all the time in the spring. Good ID!
then maybe a virginia rail? (gotta learn not to shoot from the hip)
Keleigh,
You may not know that the Baker Wetlands are just outside Lawrence, KS. Clapper rails are generally found on the coast—not that it couldn’t happen but I’m not even sure there’s a KS record for a Clapper. I can tell you that it this were a clapper, Kylee wouldn’t have waited until Jan. to tell us about it….
Note the grey cheeks on this apparently adult bird….
that looks like a clapper rail to me!!
