Impressive ID~and impressive moth! That is really cool that one of your students found that.
You’re too modest! It is indeed a gaudy sphinx (Eumorpha labruscae), which only shows up as a vagrant in this area. I got ID help on this from Holly Davis, Entomology, KSU.
looks like a green gaudy sphinx moth or a hawk moth of some type – at least a moth of the family sphingidae (not very good with insects but that’s my guess!) hint was the hurricane – normally see this in tropical areas
