Another summer workshop opportunity

The Dolan DNA Learning Center (DNALC) is a pioneer in modern biology education. Since it’s founding in 1988, more than 8,000 teaching faculty have received intensive training at DNALC-sponsored workshops conducted in 42 states and several foreign countries. For 2008, we are offering a series of exciting opportunities covering cancer, neuroscience, RNA interference, molecular biology, bioinformatics and genomics. For applications and additional information, please visit our Educator Training website at:

Inside Cancer

This 1-day workshop introduces an innovative Internet site on cancer biology.
Participants are guided through authoritative and engaging multimedia about how knowledge of the cancer cell is changing the battle against cancer. Using Teacher Center, they then build lesson plans and custom multimedia presentations, focusing on syllabus-centered instruction.

Amgen Leadership Symposium In Human and Genomic Biology

July 14-August 1, 2008 Cold Spring Harbor, New York

This 3-week workshop offers advanced training for high school teachers who want to extend their leadership in biotechnology and genetics education.
Instruction takes place at the DNALC, and participants are housed on the nearby campus of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island. Spend your days engaged in exciting laboratories, seminars, bioinformatics, and creative projects. In the evenings, mingle with research staff, Nobel laureates, and visiting scientists from around the world who are creating the gene age.

Dynamic Gene Workshop in Gene Annotation

This 1.5-day workshop offers deep insights into gene structure and function.
High school and college educators examine newly sequenced regions of the rice genome to “second guess” gene models that have been predicted by computers, but not yet closely examined by scientists.

FOLLOW-UP WORKSHOP

Florida A&M University,Tallahassee, Florida
NEW WORKSHOP DATE: March 21-22, 2008
Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am – 12:00 noon

We are offering a 1.5-day, follow-up workshop and equipment footlocker
training session at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida. Teachers
who wish to participate in the equipment loan program are required to attend
this short training workshop to be familiarized with the equipment sets,
which include PCR-machine, centrifuge, pipets, gels, UV lightbox, and camera.
In addition to equipment training, participants will conduct a Genetically
Modified Organisms (GMO) laboratory and associated bioinformatics exercises,
and utilize the DNALC’s Internet site Dynamic Gene. Upon completion,
participants can borrow the equipment footlockers from FAMU for use at their
institution.

The workshop is open to previous participants in the Plant Molecular Genetics
and Genomics workshops and to educators near Tallahassee, FL, Holly Springs,
MS, Greensboro, NC, and Weslaco, TX. If you have colleagues in these areas who
may be interested in this loan program please encourage them to apply.

Silencing Genomes

This 5-day workshop on RNA interference (RNAi) brings college educators
up-to-the-minute with this revolutionary discovery. In labs and computer work,
participants learn all the steps needed to go from genomic sequence information
to induce RNAi to silence individual genes in the roundworm C. elegans. This
workshop provides great individual labs and templates for independent student
projects.

April 21-25 – Dolan DNA Learning Center, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory,
Cold Spring Harbor, NY June 2-6, 2008 – Rust College, Holly Springs, MS
August 4-8, 2008 – Fralin Biotechnology Center, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA
August 18-22, 2008 – Biolink Texas (Austin Community College), Austin, TX

I attended the Amgen Leadership Symposium last summer and was provided with excellent training in RNAi and C. elegans. I found it great material to connect biotech methods to a meaningful activity. For those interested I will be presenting at KATS this spring about RNAi and possible connections in the classroom.
